You and Your Horse
Over the years, working in the way we do at IH, we have completely changed our relationship with horses from how we see them to how we keep and interact with them. The EAPD work has allowed us to see them through a different lens, moving away from riding and training and learning how to truly listen and communicate with them in a more natural way, one we believe allows the horse to stay true to their innate needs; that being desire for social interaction which comes hand in hand with herd safety, 24hr hour access to forage and natural shelter. However we do recognise that we are unable to fulfil their reproduction needs due to domestication and controlling herd numbers.
Our relationship with the horses has transformed in many ways and we have found it liberating not only for us but the horses too; to approach interactions with a high level of awareness in our mental and emotional state and therefore our behaviour. Much horse training focuses on the horse but being herd animals they are highly attuned and reactive/responsive to other herd members moods and intentions and that includes us humans when we are around them. We see the communication needs to start with awareness of ourselves and considering how we are communicating. We therefore feel it is our obligation to work on ourselves first and foremost when interacting with horses as it is often how we are communicating that causes confusion for horses. If we aren’t aware of how a thought in the back of our mind can create tension in our body even when we are trying not to think about it, then we won’t understand why our horse might be ‘acting a bit funny’ or refusing to do something. The EAPD has taught us, and continues to teach us the subtleties of how we connect to ourselves has a direct impact on our communication with our horses (and others around us).
With this in mind we like to work with horse owners to help them improve their connection with their horse/s. A consultation via Zoom or Whatsapp to work with them and their horse, either to help them with a particular area of their relationship or to help them learn and develop their level of self-awareness.
Working in this way helps to:

Q.Will the exercises you share effect our other training.
A.The short answer to this is no however, you may find your mindset shift a bit when you do this course as it is largely about your self awareness, this in turn may make you want to review your training programme. If anything the course will enhance your training as the exercises should help (when practiced regularly) to increase your awareness of your behaviours as well as your horses. The more aware you are of your moods and behaviour, the more aware you become of how you are impacting the relationship/interaction with your horse.
Q.My horse is currently lame, is this something I could do with my horse whilst she is out of action?
A..Absolutely, this course is perfect for that scenario as it doesn’t demand anything from the horse other than to be themselves. It is the human who is doing all the work!
Q. I ride regularly is this course about not riding?
A.This course is a self-development course for the person, the exercises shared are for the person to do and the horse benefits as a result. We do not talk about how to apply the exercises when riding on the course BUT many of the exercises are easily transferable to when you ride if you are looking to develop your relationship in the saddle as well as on the ground.
Q. What do you mean by this being a personal development course for the owner and will I be asked personal questions about my life?
A. Personal development is about raising awareness for how you think, feel and behave, by being aware you can have choice for how to interact and show up with others (including your horse) and with the relationship you have with yourself. Whilst this course may ask some questions that you feel are personal, it’s ok because the course is for you to do in the privacy of your own home at your own pace.
